Handiwork

Signature projects, built by hand

Handiwork means work done by hand, with skill. These are the projects we take the most care with: designed around your home, built to fit exactly, and meant to last for decades.

Built-ins

Custom built-ins & closets

A built-in looks like it came with the house. We design it around your walls, outlets, windows, and trim, then build and finish it on site so it fits exactly.

  • Bookcases and wall-to-wall shelving
  • Entertainment and media walls
  • Window seats with storage
  • Walk-in and reach-in closet systems
  • Pantry shelving
  • Office built-ins and desks

Every built-in starts with a visit to measure and a simple sketch you approve before any material is cut. Quoted per project.

Outdoor

Decks & railings

Decks that feel solid underfoot, with stairs and railings built to code. We also repair and restore decks that have good bones but tired boards.

  • New wood and composite decks
  • Deck stairs and landings
  • Railings, balusters, and handrails
  • Board replacement and restoration
  • Old deck tear-out and haul-away

We pull permits where required. Winter is the time to design and book a spring build. Quoted per project after a site visit.

Entry

Mudroom lockers & benches

The back door is where the mess lands. Lockers and a bench give every coat, bag, and pair of boots a place.

  • Locker-style cubbies with hooks
  • Boot benches with storage below
  • Upper cabinets and shelves
  • Built-in drop zones for keys and mail
  • Finished to match your trim

Designed to your space and family size. Quoted per project after we measure.

Outdoor living

Custom fire pits & hardscapes

A fire pit and patio turn a yard into the place everyone gathers. We design the layout with you and build it to last through Illinois winters.

  • Custom wood-burning fire pits
  • Paver and stone patios
  • Seating walls
  • Walkways and garden paths
  • Low retaining walls and steps

Built spring through fall; winter is the time to design and book. Quoted per project. More on fire pits and hardscapes.

Aging in place

Home safety upgrades for staying home

Thoughtful changes that make a house safer and easier to live in for older homeowners, without making it feel like a hospital.

  • Wheelchair and threshold ramps
  • Walk-in tubs and showers
  • Grab bars and shower seats
  • Handrails on both sides of the stairs
  • Brighter lighting and lever handles

Starts with a free home safety walkthrough. More on aging-in-place upgrades.

Concrete

Concrete repair, restoration & beautification

Cracked steps, pitted patios, and dull garage floors brought back, usually without tearing anything out.

  • Crack and step repair
  • Foundation crack repair and wall support
  • Tuck-pointing and masonry repair
  • Resurfacing worn and pitted slabs
  • Cleaning and sealing
  • Epoxy garage and basement floors
  • Decorative overlays and staining

Outdoor work spring through fall; garage and basement floors year-round. See concrete services.

How a Handiwork project runs

  1. Visit and measure

We look at the space, talk through how you'll use it, and take measurements.

  2. Sketch and written price

You get a simple drawing and a fixed price before anything is ordered.

  3. Build, finish, clean up

Built and finished on site, with the work area cleaned and scraps hauled away.
